Crossboyne Church, one of the oldest in the Diocese, will host special celebrations to mark the two hundredth anniversary of the opening of the church back in 1826. Fr Sean Flynn, PP, Crossboyne and Kilvine, will be joined by Archbishop Francis Duffy and other members of the clergy for Mass and celebrations at 11.30am on Sunday, August 23.
Known as the Church of the Sacred Heart, it has been at the centre of the local community for two centuries. An older place of worship existed in the area prior to 1826. Crossboyne church was built during the stewardship Fr Andrew Gavan who was a native of Inishlyre, an island in Clew Bay. He procured a site of a quarter of an acre and the land was given by E J Nolan, a benevolent Catholic landlord and an attorney who lived in Logboy,
The organising committee extends a war, welcome to parishioners, those with roots in the parish and anyone with any connection to Crossboyne to come along on Sunday. Refreshments will be served after Mass.
