Cllr Reilly says bridge 'was never intended for heavy vehicles'

Dundalk-Carlingford's Cllr John Reilly says he has "very deep concerns" about heavy goods vehicle (HGV) traffic using St John Bridge at Toberona Dundalk.

The Kilcurry-based councillor says this issue has only recently begun and he says, coincides with the opening of the Dundalk North Business Park on Armagh Road.

The Fine Gael councillor told the Dundalk Democrat that "HGVs coming down the M1 motorway from Dublin are being directed to exit the Castleblaney exit at junction 17 on Google Maps as the shortest route.

"The trucks are then driving down the Mill Road and turning for Balbriggan therefore having to cross St John Bridge ending up at a dangerous junction to take them out onto the Armagh Road."

Cllr Reilly continued, "many local residents who live on this route have been on the phone to me voicing concerns over Road Safety. That is only a narrow country road not suitable for large vehicles taking a short cut .

"That bridge was built in the horse and cart days", claimed Cllr Reilly, "and was never intended for heavy vehicles. Over the coming days I will be making representations with LCC on this road safety issue."
