THE Norwegian Ambassador to Ireland visited Limerick recently to explore current and future ties between the region and her native country.

Ambassador Mari Skåre and her team of executives journeyed to the Treaty County to partake in a series of meetings in an attempt to expand regional ties.

Mayor of the city and county of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley, and UL President Professor Kerstin Mey were among those to meet with the ambassador.

Across the visit, among the topics of discussion was offshore wind, at the Shannon Foynes Port.

Since signing a deal last year, they have become regular collaborators with Norwegian companies.

According to Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy, Bente Lyngstad, two pre-approved projects to facilitate this industry include Norwegian developers.

“We are heavily involved in the offshore industry in Ireland”, said Ms Lyngstad.

The Smart Cities initiative was discussed heavily, where under the Limerick 2030 Economic and Spatial Plan, this project will use digital technologies to provide better services for the people of Limerick in the near future.

From Norway’s standing, their university, NTNU, have built relationships with UL and separately, with Limerick City over the past three years to develop climate-friendly urban environments.

For the future, the Deputy stated: “We see many possibilities of co-operation with Limerick.”
