A NEW charitable initiative has been set up in Limerick to help Ukrainian refugees or asylum seekers in need and they are seeking donations from the public.

The initiative, The Bike Hub, is providing refurbished bikes which have been donated by members of the public at their Singland Cross, Dublin Road location.

Funded by Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel unit with the assistance of Limerick Civic Trust, the project is a collaboration between a number of stakeholders including the local authority's Ukrainian Response Team, Doras and PAUL Partnership.

The funding has allowed the establishment of the Hub, the provision of bike repair stations, bike tool kits, helmets, locks and bike racks. So far 37 bicycles have been donated, spruced up and passed on to grateful new owners.

Bikes can be donated to The Bike Hub on Thursdays between 5pm and 6pm and on Saturday mornings between 10 O'clock and 12 noon until further notice.

John Lannon, CEO of Doras said: "We’re delighted to be part of this ground-breaking project in Limerick. Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are amongst the most underprivileged and disadvantaged within our community, and affording them the opportunity to be among the first to benefit from the new Limerick Bike Hub is fitting".
