Council executive alleges trader made move to allow parking of motorised vehicle

A SENIOR council official has alleged that a local business owner broke a bike stand in a city centre laneway to provide a car parking space.

Kieran Lehane, council’s metropolitan director, made the disclosure during a presentation outlining what the local authority is doing to clean up side lanes across the urban area.

Mr Lehane pointed out how stands to allow for bike parking were installed in some laneways.

In once instance, he said: “A local business owner broke the bike stands to allow unauthorised parking on the lane.”

To tackle this, the local authority has introduced bollards down some of the streets in order to stop illegal parking.

The local authority executive told councillors that in many cases, double yellow lines were no longer effective in deterring illegal parking.

"We are trying different things for different lanes. These are storage units for the bins to get the bins off the lane and reduce unauthorised dumping and dumpster diving. We have improved public lighting which is critical because of some of the nocturnal activities on the lanes when evenings are dark,” he told metropolitan members.
