Christmas Day run highlights mental health services in Limerick

FOR MOST of us, Christmas Day was a time to ‘veg out’ in front of the television, and enjoy some good food.
Instead, Roxboro Road man John McMahon and his nephew Thomas McMahon, 15, ditched the festive nibbles and took part in a 12km run around the city.
John said they did this in order to encourage young people in sports to avail of the supports available to them if they are feeling low.
The pair finished the course in not much more than one hour.
Hailing from Castleconnell, Thomas is a world under-16 Muay Thai champion.
Indeed, he will head out to Thailand to take part in a training camp ahead of competing in the same tournament.
Thomas said: “Running with my uncle is important to try and get the message out to young people like myself and older that there’s always someone out there who wants to listen and understand that a problem shared is a problem halved.”
