Broadcaster and sports star to address event

BROADCASTER and sports star Cora Staunton is to be the keynote speaker at a major conference in September.

The former Mayo ladies footballer and current RTE Gaelic football pundit will present a session at the Medical Technology Ireland 2026 conference.

It takes place in Galway Racecourse on Thursday, September 24.

Her detailed session is entitled ‘Leading through pressure, change and setbacks’.

Cora is one of Ireland’s top athletes, whose career has spanned almost three decades and four sports.

A native of Carnacon in Mayo, she has enjoyed a hugely successful career in Ladies Gaelic Football, landing several All-Ireland titles with both club and county.

She also played soccer and rugby, representing Mayo FC in European competition.

In 2017, Ms Staunton broke new ground when she became the first Irish player to join the Australian Football League for Women (AFLW), signing for the GWS Giants.

She was the first of 46 women now playing Down Under in that competition, and made her mark, becoming the fastest player to reach 50 goals.

After a severe leg break in late 2019 threatened to end her career, she fought back to be ready for round one of the following season and became the oldest player ever to take the field in AFLW history.

She is a board member of the Gaelic Players Association, where she currently holds the role of vice-president.

The conference programme tackles the most pressing issues facing medtech today.

She serves as head coach with Ballina Stephenites senior men’s football team, who won their third Mayo Senior Club Football Championship in-a-row last October, becoming one of the few women to lead a men’s team.

The exhibition will showcase more than 420 Irish and international companies with exhibition booths over four floors.

It’s free to attend September’s conference.
