COUNCIL has identified spots in the city centre for two new dog parks.

Space in O’Brien’s Park at Clare Street is being looked at to install a recreational space for pooches.

And at Steamboat Quay, a narrow stretch of grass between Mount Kennett skate park and Shannon Bridge is being mooted for a dog run.

The news was confirmed to Labour councillor Conor Sheehan who had a notice of motion passed at this month’s metropolitan district meeting.

His motion sought the introduction of a facility in his City North constituency, which covers Clare Street.

“A dog park is something which wouldn’t cost the earth to deliver but would bring enormous benefits for people who walk dogs in the locality and help some bit in terms of addressing dog fouling which I know is an issue for every member of this council,” he said.

The motion was seconded by fellow northside councillor Sharon Benson, Sinn Fein.

She also called for the opening of a coffee dock at the park to boost employment and give a service to park users.

Also speaking in support were councillors Elisa O’Donovan, Social Democrats and Kieran O’Hanlon, Fianna Fail who backed the idea so long as residents are consulted with.

Metropolitan district leader, Cllr Azad Talukder of Fianna Fail said it’s vital people in his own area are consulted before any dog run is put in at Steamboat Quay.

“People in Mount Kennett need to know exactly what is going on,” he insisted.

In a written answer, senior council engineer Aidan Finn confirmed the location in O’Brien’s Park was identified, with a local authority spokesperson confirming the possibility of Steamboat Quay.

Mr Finn added: “There is no funding source identified for the project. The council will continue its endeavours to source funding.”

He added that a dog park could cost up to €30,000.
