Permission sought to convert retail premises into a townhouse

PLANNING permission is being sought to convert a landmark former retail unit in the city centre into a townhouse.

Doran Financial Services are seeking the green light from council to convert the building at the corner of Roches Street and O’Connell Street into a new four-bedroom home.

The building has had a variety of uses down the years.

It was a shoe shop, and then an old world sweet shop was opened on the site.

Most recently, it was home to a vape shop, but it’s been out of use for more than three years.

If Doran, a company based at O’Connell Street in the city centre, get permission, it will mean the change of use of the unit to residential.

According to the application before council, the site is partly zoned as office use, partly for retail.

It means its use will need to be changed.

New sash windows are proposed, and a new access from the roof at 34 O’Connell Street is also part of the application.

A new toilet will be added to the ground floor shop unit at 34 O’Connell Street.

Limerick City and County Council is accepting submissions on the application until next Tuesday, June 24.

The decision is scheduled for July 15.
