AN GARDA Siochana have issued an appeal for motorists to drive responsibly this Bank Holiday weekend.

It comes after a motorists on the Limerick to Cork road was detected driving at 155 kilometres per hour (kph).

That's well over the speed limit of 100 kph, and above the 120 kph allowed on Ireland's motorways.

The driver was fined €150 and received three penalty points.

Last year, 156 people died on Irish roads, the largest death toll since 2016. In the first month of this year, 18 people lost their lives on roads, the biggest death toll in a decade.

As well as motorists, the gardai are urging road users to 'be seen'.

Drivers are urged to drive with dipped headlights during the day, especially if they do not have daytime running lights.

Pedestrians are advised to wear high visibility at night on roads without public lighting and footpaths.

Cyclists should wear safety helmets and ensure they have a white light to the front and red light to the back so they are visible to pedestrians and drivers, according to the RSA.

Assistant commissioner, Paula Hilman, roads policing, An Garda Síochána, said: “In this first St Brigid’s bank holiday weekend, I am appealing to all roads users to look out for one another on the road. Bank holiday weekends are a very busy time on the roads and our experience is that the risk of fatal and serious injury collisions increases during these periods. This year to date, there have been 20 fatalities on the roads. We are asking everyone to work together in keeping our roads safe.”
