GARDAÍ are issuing advice to the public after heating fuel was stolen from a Limerick school.

The national school was targeted by thieves as temperatures plummeted to subzero temperatures across the county.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, crime prevention officer at Henry Street garda station gave advice to people on how to protect themselves from this type of crime.

"It is important to protect your home heating fuel but added security measures are required if heating fuel is for a premises that is unattended at times.

"A building alarm can be extended to a shed or garage if your oil tank is within them or a stand-alone fuel tank alarm can be fitted if they are out in the open.

"Layer up the security on your fuel tank, it should be contained within a structure that is capable of being locked."
