Doon GAA Club is embarking on a 24-hour walkathon on Friday

DOON GAA has taken huge strides to become a powerhouse in Limerick GAA with a walkathon this weekend to help them further on that journey.

They are nearing €110,000 being raised - without one step being taken!

A club spokesperson said: “This October bank holiday weekend, our community will come together for a 24-hour walkathon to help create better, more inclusive facilities for our club and the wider community.”

It commences at 6pm this Friday, October 30 at Doon GAA Club. Participants will walk during the night and the following day with people joining throughout.

“Every step we take together builds a better future. Doon GAA has always been built on people coming together - giving their time, energy and support to create something that matters to our community.

“All ages. Near and far. Walking, wheeling or joining virtually. One step or 10,000 — everyone can play their part. Together, we can create something special - facilities that bring people together, open up new opportunities and strengthen our community for years to come,” said the spokesperson.

They say come for five minutes or five hours, walk, wheel, support or join virtually.

“The challenge isn’t how far you go. It’s that we do it together,” they say.

If locals can’t walk on the day, they can still support the community by sponsoring a participant.

“You are helping us create facilities that will serve children, families and our wider community for generations to come. Every contribution matters. No amount is too small. Every contribution moves us forward,” they say.

One of the families taking part is the Stapletons. David, a former Limerick U-21 hurler who won an All-Ireland medal in 2000 and Doon stalwart, will be joined by wife Morita and children Lucy, Abbie and Harry.

David said he is supporting the Doon GAA development campaign to help create better facilities for their club and community.

“The new development will provide more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part, stay active and feel part of the community. Every step and every contribution will help us get there,” said David.
