GARDAI are advising schools, churches and sports clubs across Limerick to be vigilant as they are aware of bogus tradesmen currently operating locally.

One of the services which the criminals are purporting to offer is the repainting lines in car parks.

A GAA club in county Limerick was offered this carpark painting service but, according to gardai, they had the sense to refuse the offer.

"The scam begins with the workmen making unexpected phone calls to the owners or operators of buildings with car parks. The bogus workmen claim they have been renewing road markings locally and offer to use their leftover paint to repaint lines on the car parks," explained divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch who added that they will often quote a very low price

Sgt Leetch says individuals and organisations should be extremely careful if they are approached.

"This offer (low quote) sounds too good to be true and it is not true because once the work is completed, they will demand a lot more money. They can be very intimidating so the advice here is only employ a certified person to do any job for you. Make sure that they are a legitimate company before you employ them," she advised.
