LIMERICK IFA chairman Sean Lavery has issued a rallying call to local farmers to support a protest this Thursday night, February 1.

Mr Lavery said they want to send a quick, sharp message to the Government and to show solidarity with European farmers who have been protesting in recent weeks.

"Their problems are our problems. They are slightly different in every case but we all have problems with the way Governments are treating farmers. It is no coincidence that the German, Dutch, Belgian and French farmers are all protesting for their own particular local reasons.

"They are coming from a sense of dissatisfaction with EU regulations and the way they are being implement and applied," said Mr Lavery, who hit out at the amount of "red tape".

"It is death by a thousand cuts. It is just making things more difficult, slower, awkward and adding costs," said Mr Lavery.

The Limerick IFA chairman called on as many farmers, as possible, driving tractors to assemble at the junction of the M21 and N21 near Patrickswell at 7.30pm this Thursday night. The nearest Eircode is V94 P9RF

"We will depart at 8pm, proceed onto the N21 in the direction of Adare, drive into the centre of Adare to the roundabout beside AIB and return in Limerick direction to exit for N20. Tractors only, no implements. Please wear a high-vis jacket. No pedestrians.

"This protest is happening in every county tonight. Its therefore important that Limerick plays its part. All going well, 500 to 1,000 tractors could take part tonight across the country," said Mr Lavery.
