LIMERICK is set to experience a “different kind of energy” for this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations, according to the local council.

Limerick City and County Council have said that from March 15 to March 18, Limerick will “come alive” with “dazzling” mirror dancers, “gravity-defying” street performers and “toe-tapping tunes.”

While the St Patrick’s Day Parade and the International Band Championship will remain centre stage, there will also be events at King John’s Castle, the Limerick Museum, the Milk Market and the International Rugby Experience.

BT Young Scientist winner Seán O’Sullivan will marshal this year’s city parade, which will take place from 12pm on O’Connell Street.

A wheelchair-accessible and autism-friendly sensory area will also be unveiled on the day, the Crescent, O’Connell Avenue.

The 52nd annual International Band Championship Parade championship takes place this year on Monday, March 18, with a free jamboree of live performances at Arthur’s Quay Park.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell said that when it comes to St Patrick’s Day festivities, Limerick has “a different kind of energy – it's contagious, it’s edgy and it’s ready to embrace you with open arms.”

Festival and events officer, Eugene Crimmins, said that Limerick is fortunate to have such an “eclectic mix of arts, culture and entertainment on our doorstep all year round.”

“We have added a series of fun events and activities, with something to suit all tastes. So, dust off your dancing shoes, don your greenest attire and feel energised by a dazzling display of Irish pride,” he added.
