Limerick TD calls on gardai to go after dealers

THERE are renewed calls on gardai to “go after the top level people” in the illicit drugs trade in Limerick.
Sinn Fein TD, Maurice Quinlivan has highlighted the drug activity which is taking place along Canal Bank in the city, after hearing from concerned residents.
“It’s not unusual to see people inject themselves or do crack cocaine publicly any more, unfortunately,” he said.
“What we need is to have a garda response to go after the people that are dealing these illegal drugs, and I mean the top level people. We need to make sure the Criminal Assets Bureau takes their profits out of it and goes after them.”
Mr Quinlivan said that drug and alcohol services offer great services, but that they lack funding. “We have some wonderful groups but because of the lack of resources, they can't do as much work as we would hope they could. Most of these groups had their funding cut in 2008 / 2009 which have never really been restored.
“We're playing a lot of catch up here, and I don't have to tell anybody this, but we have a massive problem with crack cocaine.
"I'm on public record for saying this, crack cocaine was delivered into Limerick by an unscrupulous gang who deliberately did it to target some of the most vulnerable people,” he said.
