Marina market mooted for Limerick's former Cleeve's factory

Vast riverside site set to be transformed
THE FORMER Cleeve's toffee factory on Limerick's riverside could become to a marina market, in the same style as what's offered in Cork.
That's the view of City East Sinn Fein councillor Ursula Gavan, who tabled a question to the former David Conway, the former chief executive of Limerick Twenty Thirty, the public landowner of the Cleeve's factory.
Mr Conway suggested among the regeneration of the 10-acre site, this could be considered.
As it stands, there are plans for commercial, civic and residential use on the site on the north bank of the Shannon.
But Cllr Gavan says while that is in development, a "meanwhile" use like a marina market could be considered.
"It is underutilised at the moment. It goes back as far as the Salesian College. It's front-facing onto the river. We have so much potential, not just for a marina market, but an arts cinema, a cultural space. I know we have our own market in town, and I wouldn't want to take from that. But there are other things they could do for the site," she said.
"Yes, there is a masterplan, but at the moment, we don't have anything coming down the line from it. We could use it for St Patrick's weekend. Just use the site as opposed to having it sit there doing nothing. At the moment, we are being more reactive than proactive," added Cllr Gavan.
