Judge stresses the importance of boy getting same opportunities as others

A CONVICTION has been recorded against a mother for her son’s poor attendance record at a County Limerick school.

The mother - who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child - was prosecuted by Tusla.

An education welfare officer with Tusla took the stand at Kilmallock Court. The Child and Family Agency employee said the boy is now in care and has a 100% school attendance record. The court heard the boy’s previous school attendance record was 0%.

The Tusla employee said there was an “enormous improvement” (in attendance) and that he was doing very well in school, which was welcomed by Judge Patricia Harney.

“The most important thing is that this child is going to school and is getting the same opportunities as other children to realise his potential. He is a bright and able child,” said Judge Harney.

The judge said she would record a conviction against the boy’s mother but would not impose a penalty.

“A conviction will be recorded on the basis that if anything happens down the line.

“I will just leave it at that. I realise matters have progressed for the child,” said Judge Harney.
