New crossing for busy Limerick road ‘known for speeding’

A NEW controlled pedestrian crossing point will be installed on a Limerick city road “known for speeding”.
The crossing point will be installed beside the current Ballycummin Road, Raheen Business Park pedestrian access point using a raised table top platform which will also act as a speed reduction piece of infrastructure.
This will be the only controlled crossing point along this stretch of road supporting people walking to work and for leisure, or indeed those cycling.
Delivery of the crossing is expected in the next six to eight weeks with the help of Limerick City and County Council’s road section and Active Travel Team.
Councillor Daniel Butler, a member of Limerick City and County Council's Travel and Transportation SPC, said the road has “speeding issues”.
“Ballycummin Road has been a road known for speeding over the years with an incident of an installed driver speed feedback sign being broken as a car crashed into it at speed, ironically,” he pointed out.
“It is a road used by pedestrians as part of the heavily used Raheen/Dooradoyle walking circle. It houses a number of houses along the route as well as access roads to other estates and of course access to Raheen Business Park.
“The road has speeding issues particularly traffic travelling from the Ballyclough direction according to speed audits.”
Mr Butler concluded: “I have secured commitment that the whole road is to undergo a review with a design to deliver a safer road for pedestrians and cyclists to come before us as councillors hopefully by the end of the year.
“This will transform this road into a residential style road as it should be rather than the dangerous one it is now”.
