LIMERICK colleges and universities are set to receive over €1.6m in “world-class” equipment.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, has announced funding of €15m for research equipment for the higher education sector across Ireland.

The University of Limerick (UL), Technological University of Shannon (TUS) and Mary Immaculate College (MIC) will be allocated a total of €1,692,982.  Individually, UL will receive €930,600, TUS will be allocated €491,405 and MIC, €270,977.

The grant will allow third level institutions to invest in new “state-of-the-art” equipment which will have a “profound impact on individuals, on Irish society, and across the world,” according to Minister Harris.

“The funding announced will help them upgrade what they already have, and also purchase new state-of-the-art equipment,” said Minister Harris.

“It will not only allow universities to improve their current research equipment but, importantly, will also help them to build future research capacity, ensuring that as a nation we will be recognised as a world-leader in research and innovation for years to come.

“We ask our researchers to tackle the challenges we are facing across climate change, housing, resilient food systems and so much more, and they are always quick to respond.

“But in order to give them the best chance of success, then we must provide them with the best possible tools.”
