WATCH: Limerick fans celebrate following fifth Munster Final win in a row
FIVE IN A ROW baby!
It's yet another fantastic weekend to be from Limerick as our hurlers further cemented their status as modern-day greats by landing a record equalling fifth straight Munster title.
They edged out a spirited Clare team by the narrowest of margins, 1-23 to 1-22.
The closing stages were packed with tension, with many in the stadium racing onto the turf when the referee blew for a free on 74 minutes - some believing it to be the final whistle.
After the pitch was cleared, it was only a matter of seconds before the crowds again entered the fray to finally celebrate our hurler's remarkable achievement.
John Kiely's charges march onto the semi-finals, and are just two victories away from securing a fourth consecutive All-Ireland crown.
Jack Ahern from Kileely said: “Any day you beat Clare in Limerick, it's a good day. But I've a funny feeling it will be Clare and Limerick in the All-Ireland final too. The two best teams in Ireland at the moment.”
Mungret man Noel Bowman said: “Like true All-Ireland champions, they come good when they need to, and that's what champions are.”
“We are going down in history and it's great for Declan Hannon to lift five-in-a-row,” he said in reference to Limerick's skipper.
City Sinn Fein TD Maurice Quinlivan correctly predicted a one-point Limerick win, as he did in 2018 when the first All-Ireland title of this era was won at Croke Park.
“This is why we love the game of hurling. It was bing-bang, over and back. Clare were fantastic as well. Bring on the All-Ireland: it's the best game in the world!”
Thomondgate lad Ronan Fitzgerald believes by beating the Banner, Limerick's hurlers have gotten over a psychological barrier which could pave the way for more Dublin glory next month.
“It was a hurdle we had to overcome after they beat us in the Round Robin. We were missing a few players, Sean Finn and Cian Lynch. Aaron Gillane lifted our spirits with the goal,” he said.
