Workers gather in Limerick to show solidarity with those impacted by Dublin riots
A DEMONSTRATION has taken in Limerick city centre to show solidarity with those impacted by last week's violent scenes in Dublin.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) had called for people to gather to show their solidarity with public workers who were affected by the riots in Dublin following the incident.
A handful people gathered at Bedford Row in Limerick at lunchtime this Monday with members of ROSA, the socialist feminist movement; The Irish Socialist Party and Limerick Against Racism all taking part.
Participants, who held banners, chanted: "Migrants rights, workers rights - stay in the struggle, stay in the fight".
A spokesperson for ROSA said its thoughts, sympathy and solidarity are with the victims of last week's attack and their families.
“This brutal act of male violence against women and children was cynically seized on by the fascist far right to try and provoke attacks in the most grotesque way on migrants and workers. We stand in solidarity with all people of colour, migrants and LGBTQIA+ community. Furthermore, we stand in solidarity with all transport, retail and public workers who had to face the wrath of the mob whipped up by the far right."
A number of demonstrations took place around the country - including in Dublin where hundreds gathered.
“It’s a symbolic gesture and it’s an opportunity to do just that. We have to challenge this far-right xenophobic thinking that tries to make Ireland a place that’s unwelcome for migrants,” said Owen Reidy, general secretary of ICTU.
