Classic black comedy from renowned Oscar-nominated playwright coming to Tipperary

The Forge Players will take to the stage of the Simon Ryan Theatre, Tipperary Excel with their production of The Cripple of Inishmaan from Sunday, January 26 - Tuesday, January 28.

This classic black comedy is from renowned playwright Martin McDonagh.

Martin’s work is known and loved by both theatre and film audiences alike.

The Cripple of Inishmaan is set on the small Aran Islands community of Inishmaan (Inis Meáin) off the Western Coast of Ireland in 1934, where the inhabitants are excited to learn of a Hollywood film crew’s arrival in neighbouring Inishmore (Inis Mór) to make a documentary about life on the islands.

Billy Claven (who is a cripple), is eager to escape the gossip, poverty and boredom of Inishmaan and vies for a part in the film, and to everyone’s surprise, the orphan and outcast gets his chance.

Michael O’Donoghue is the Director for this year’s production and is well-known for his remarkable ability to identify a play that will bring out the very best of his actors.

You can be guaranteed that any play that he brings to the stage is of the highest standard that can be achieved in amateur drama and this one will be no different.

Everybody in the cast and crew are excited to be doing a comedy and what better than a comedy from the acclaimed Martin McDonagh, the recent winner of a Golden Globe award for his new film The Banshees of Inisherin.

McDonagh wrote The Cripple of Inishmaan in 1996 and it is very interesting to see how he portrays the people on the island of Inishmaan in the 1930’s through the lens of modern society. Under the direction of Michael O’Donoghue this play will have every last detail down to perfection and will bring you a fantastic evening of entertainment.

Prepare yourself for the rapturous laughter and enjoyment as this wonderful tale unfolds.
