Tipperary County Council have granted planning permission for a new burial ground to be located in Saint Mary's Church, Townsparks, Cahir.

The application for planning was submitted by Waterford & Lismore Diocesan to "create a burial ground and all associated site works" at Saint Mary's Church in Cahir.

An archaeological assessment was undertaken by the council in their assessment of the application and it was found that a burial ground located at the site would have no considerable impact on the archaeological heritage of the area.

The new burial ground will be located next to a car park beside the church.

The new graveyard is welcomed by many, after news that burial sites are filling up around Tipperary in recent years.

The graveyard plans to construct 41 dedicated urn plots and 298 grave plots, with two burials per grave plot.

This would allow 596 new burials to take place in the new burial site, with statistics suggesting that the graveyard will not be full for another 34 years after completion.
