Councillor Michael Fitzgerald has issued a touching statement after he attended his "very last county council meeting in Nenagh, after 45 years as a member" on Monday.
The Fine Gael councillor added: "I remember in particular today, all the great people who supported me and worked with me over many years, so many are no longer with us.
"I feel honoured and privileged today, to have been given the opportunity to play my part in local government in county Tipperary for so long, and to serve with some of the finest people from all political parties and non-parties over the years.
"I wish all my colleagues well in the upcoming election and best of luck to all who contest.
"Thanks to all my family, brothers and sisters, for their loyal and constant support.
"My wife Mary, my daughters; Caroline, Sinead and Mary Claire, and my son Micheal, for always being there for me.
"I was so proud in 1979 to reclaim my late father's seat.
"He passed away in 1981, and I know my recently deceased mother is near me and looking down on me as I say goodbye to Tipperary County Council today.
"Finally, I want to wish my brother John the very best of luck in the Clonmel electoral area on June 7.
"God bless all who have journeyed with me, and as I leave, I sincerely hope that our County will continue to develop and prosper in the future."
