A female drug addict who stole a number of items did so because she needed to get her “fix”, Judge Elizabeth MacGrath was told at Nenagh District Court.

Aoife Kennedy, 26, of 24D Ormond Drive, Nenagh, pleaded to theft and possession of stolen goods on separate dates in Nenagh.

The court heard that she took toys valued at €293.76 from JKC’s, Pearse Street, Nenagh, on October 20, 2023. The toys were not recovered.

Ms Kennedy also pleaded to possessing children’s clothing valued at €238.50 at Friar Street, Nenagh, on October 2, 2023, knowing it to be stolen.

She further pleaded to the theft of clothing valued at €88 from Tesco, Nenagh, on October 3, 2023, and possession of a tinfoil bag that was intended to be used in the course of theft.

The court heard Ms Kennedy had 16 previous convictions.

Her solicitor, David Peters, said that his client had a “serious drug addiction” and the thefts were due to her need to get a “fix”.

She had spent the previous two weeks in custody and was on a Methadone programme and wanted to enter residential treatment.

Mr Peters outlined that Ms Kennedy was in accommodation provided by Novas and was anxious to remain in that accommodation.

Judge MacGrath remanded Ms Kennedy on bail to January 25, 2024, telling her that she wanted to see her get the chance to get secure residential treatment in the meantime.
