Thurles MDC were told there are applications in to have the matter addressed

Councillor Jim Ryan has asked the council to explain where €1 million in funding put aside for the management of historic landfills was spent.

At last week’s sitting of Thurles-Templemore Municipal District Council meeting, Cllr Ryan said that historic landfills had been an issue of concern going back to the old town councils.

Those councils had set aside money to manage them but they are not currently being dealt with.

He called it a “pure scandal” and asked if the council had gotten a response to their application to the EPA.

“There is real concern locally about seepage, leakage and damage. It’s really frustrating because it has been going on for so long with no word from the EPA,” said Cllr Ryan. Senior Executive Engineer Kieran McKenna said they have heard no word from the EPA.

He said they have a number of applications with the EPA. That includes the dump on the Brittas Road for which they received a draft decision last August.

They have replied with comments but further correspondence has been received.

“We would like to see a response from the EPA but we do have a number of applications in over years,” said Mr McKenna.

Cllr Ryan said he believed the dumps are a low priority because they are closed.

He asked at the next environmental update that the council might provide an answer as to where the money set aside by the town council went.
