Rockwell fall to Bandon Grammar in hard-fought Munster Senior Cup battle

Rockwell College’s Munster Senior Cup campaign came to a tough end yesterday as they fell to a strong Bandon Grammar side, 5-27, in Fethard Town Park.

The opening exchanges saw both teams locked in a tense battle, with Rockwell showing resilience in defence and pressing forward with sustained attacks.

Despite being held up over the line twice in the first half, they couldn’t break through Bandon’s defensive wall.

The Cork side took the lead after 20 minutes and extended their advantage to 0-10 by the 27-minute mark.

Just before halftime, Ralph Kerry powered over for a well-earned try to bring the score to 5-10. Strong winds made the conversion attempt difficult, and Rockwell went into the break knowing they were still in the fight.

Bandon came out firing in the second half, scoring an early unconverted try to push the score to 5-15. Rockwell fought hard, but with injuries disrupting momentum, Bandon capitalised with two more tries, sealing the 5-27 result.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Kevin O’Hora acknowledged the disappointment but emphasised the need to regroup: "The lads are devastated but its time to refocus."

While the result was disappointing, there are positives to take from the game, nine of Rockwell’s starting 15 will be eligible to play again next year, and this experience will be invaluable in shaping the squad for the future.

The team was backed by incredible support from teachers, students, and the wider Rockwell College community, creating a fantastic atmosphere in Fethard.

Now, the focus shifts to the Junior Cup squad, who kick off their campaign next Wednesday against Castletroy, also in Fethard.

Rockwell wished to express thanks to Cantor Fitzgerald for their continued support of Rockwell rugby, as the sponsorship is greatly appreciated.
