Tempers flare over new builds at Tipperary County Council

Tipperary councillors have expressed their frustration at a lack of information on new builds.
During a heated discussion on housing at this week’s sitting of Tipperary County Council, councillor Noel Coonan took issue with fellow councillor Eddie Moran.
He said the Templemore councillor had objected to a 24-house development in Templemore.
“There is no doubt that housing is the major issue for us all. I’m particularly saddened and upset that when Cllr Moran was crying crocodile tears over housing.
“There are 24 houses before this council at the moment, and guess what, Councillor Moran objected,” said Cllr Coonan.
Cllr Moran refuted Cllr Coonans assertion that he objected, saying he was supporting the people of Templemore.
Cllr Moran said: “I didn’t object. I supported the people. Don’t be trying to bully the people of Templemore like you always do,” said Cllr Moran.
County Cathaoirleach Rodger Kennedy intervened and restored order to the proceedings.
FLOW OF INFORMATION
Other councillors have raised concerns about lack of information around new developments in Nenagh and Portroe.
Nenagh councillor Seamus Morris raised concerns about a 64-house development in Springford Meadows.
He said he was not aware of it and has had some difficulty finding information. Cllr Morris said the residents are so frustrated they are objecting to the development.
He said they have been working with a local TD regarding their concerns. He said he appreciates that staff are doing their best, but the flow of information needs to improve.
Cllr Morris said people expect councillors to have the information and are annoyed when they don’t.
However, he said he feels there is a ‘poor relationship’ between the department and some councillors.
He also sought an update on a 19-house development in Portroe.
PLANNING PROCESS
Regarding Springford Meadows, Director of Services for housing, Sinead Carr said that regardless of what kind of development the public have an opportunity to respond.
“No housing development is going ahead without someone having an opportunity to go through planning permission.
“Whether it’s through planning permission or a part eight, everyone gets an opportunity to input,” said Ms Carr.
Tipperary County Council Engineer Jonathon Cooney said there had been an issue last year in Portroe but that it was resolved, and the project is back on track.
