Thurles councillor Jim Ryan has raised safety concerns on the Slievenamon Road in Thurles.

At this week’s sitting of the Thurles-Templemore District Council, he  asked  District Engineer Thomas Duffy to look at fixing some areas that are causing a hazard for cyclists and motorcyclists.

The councillor acknowledged that the road will be upgraded next year, but said it poses an immediate risk.

“Certain sections are extremely dangerous.

“I’ve been told there have been a few near misses. Can we make it a bit safer for people,” said Cllr Ryan.

Mr Duffy in his reply said they were aware that the Slievenamon Road is ‘deteriorating fast’ but would not be carrying out repairs before the upgrade.

“It is out of shape, but we have to be careful not to spend our budget where the project is imminent,” said Mr Duffy. But he said they do not want accidents and will “keep an eye on it.”
