Tipperary TD calls for enhanced TB measures to support farmers

He wants the next Minister for Agriculture to implement additional measures to address the ongoing outbreaks of Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) in parts of North Tipperary and Kilkenny North West
In a recent parliamentary question to the current Minister, Deputy Lowry stressed the critical need for increased support and resources for local farmers, who are severely impacted by these outbreaks.
Deputy Lowry emphasised the importance of ensuring sufficient personnel in District Veterinary Offices to manage disease-control issues effectively while highlighting the necessity of continuing the testing of badgers and wild deer for TB throughout the remainder of the year to prevent the further spread of the disease.
"Farmers in North Tipperary and Kilkenny North are facing significant challenges due to the high levels of TB affecting their herds" Deputy Lowry stated.
"It is imperative that we provide them with the necessary support and resources to
combat this disease and protect their livelihoods."
In response, the Minister outlined the ongoing efforts under the Bovine TB Eradication Strategy 2021-2030, which is overseen by the Bovine TB Stakeholders Forum. This Forum, supported by scientific, implementation, and finance working
groups, includes representatives from the agrifood sector, leading researchers, farming organisations, and the Department of Agriculture. The Minister assured that measures to address TB in North Tipperary and Kilkenny North will be implemented as soon as possible.
Deputy Lowry remains steadfast in his commitment to advocating for the farming community. He continues to work tirelessly to ensure that local farmers receive the support they need to reduce TB incidence rates and ultimately eradicate the disease from the national herd.
"Our farmers are the backbone of the agrifood sector, and we must do everything in our power to support them during these challenging times" he added.
