Tributes have been paid to the late Peter Mulcahy from Woodland Heights, Carrickbeg, Carrick-on-Suir who died tragically in a two vehicle collision on the N24 near Kilsheelan last week.

The beloved husband and father-of-two, who was a highly respected construction manager, was laid to rest in Carrick-on-Suir's St Mary’s Cemetery on Tuesday following his Requiem Mass.

The death of Mr Mulcahy, aged in his early 40s, in a two-vehicle collision on the N24 between Kilsheelan and the MSD plant at Ballydine last Thursday has deeply shocked and saddened all who knew him. He was the driver of a van involved in a collision with a car on the busy national road at around 1.20pm on October 5.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 40s, was seriously injured.

Cathaoirleach of Carrick- on-Suir Municipal District Cllr Kieran Bourke said it was an awful, misfortunate tragedy.

On behalf of the people of his hometown of Carrick, he extended his deepest condolences to Mr Mulcahy’s wife Louise and her young sons Peter Junior and Arlo, his other relatives, friends and work colleagues.

He said he had known Mr Mulcahy’s parents, Peter and Ena, well. Peter was their only child and they predeceased him.

His late father founded the Primo Garage and Shop at Greenside, Carrick-on-Suir while his uncle Tom is a former CEO of AIB and former chairman of Aer Lingus.

Cllr Bourke said he met Peter Mulcahy for the first time a few weeks ago at the official opening of a community garden at the new Baker’s Lot Tuath Housing Association apartments at Kickham Street in Carrick-on-Suir.

Mr Mulcahy had been representing his employer, JSF Construction, at the function.

He had been the firm’s contract manager for the Baker’s Lot project, which transformed and rejuvenated a previously derelict site on the street into homes for older people and people with disabilities who were on Tipperary County Council’s social housing list. Cllr Bourke said everyone involved in the Baker’s Lot apartments held him in very high esteen.

The deceased was a carpenter/joiner by trade and completed a BSc in Construction Management at Sligo IT over a decade ago.

He worked as a project manager for Sisk for ten years and contracts manager with Select Roofing before joining the Carrick-on-Suir based JSF Construction in March 2021.

He was contract managing the company’s major 220-house Bregawn estate project in Cashel at the time of his death.

JSF Construction said Peter Mulcahy’s death was a terrible shock to everyone in the company.

“We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Louise, children Peter Junior and Arlo. He is going to be a massive loss to us,” said a spokesperson for the company.

She remembered Peter as a very outgoing, approachable, calm, hardworking and popular colleague who was very encouraging to younger staff members.

“He was the nicest man you could meet. He was friendly with everyone and looked out for everyone.”

She added that Peter was also a great family man who was devoted to his children and wife.

Mr Mulcahy’s remains reposed at Walsh’s Funeral Home in Carrick-on-Suir on Monday from 5pm -6.30pm.

His Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Molleran’s Church in Carrickbeg at 11am on Tuesday and was followed by his burial.
