Free Culture Bus tour in the Glen of Aherlow
The free guided bus tour will be led by well-known local historian Michael Moroney,
History enthusiasts are being encouraged to book quickly for a special free Culture Bus Tour through the Glen of Aherlow on Friday, September 18th, with only a limited number of places available.
The Aherlow Fáilte Culture Evening will offer participants the opportunity to take ‘A Tour Through the Ages, exploring some of the fascinating history, heritage and archaeology to be found throughout the locality.
The guided bus tour will be led by well-known local historian Michael Moroney, who will bring participants on a journey through centuries of Aherlow’s past.
Admission to the event is completely free and refreshments will also be served on the evening. However, places on the bus are limited and advance booking is essential.The tour will depart from Lisvarrinane at 4pm on Friday, September 18.
Among the locations and subjects highlighted on the tour will be Dungrud Lios, St Ailbe’s Cross, Emly, and St Ailbe’s Well. Participants will also learn about the Ballycohey Monument and the famous Fight Against Landlordism, an important chapter in the social history of the area.
The journey will stretch much further back in time as the tour explores the area's prehistoric archaeology.
The Stone Age at Lough Gur will feature, along with the Grange Stone Circle and the Lough Gur Wedge Tomb, offering an insight into the lives and beliefs of people who inhabited the wider region thousands of years ago.
The Thomas Fitzgerald Centre will also feature as part of the tour.With the Glen of Aherlow and surrounding areas possessing a remarkable wealth of historical and archaeological heritage, the evening promises to offer both locals and visitors an opportunity to discover more about the stories, people and places that have shaped the area through the ages.
Having a local historian lead the journey will give participants an opportunity not only to visit places of historical significance but also to hear the stories behind them and put their importance into a local context.
The Culture Bus Tour is a free event, with refreshments included, but anyone interested in attending is being advised not to leave booking until the last minute as remaining spaces are limited.
The Culture Bus Tour takes place on Friday, September 18th, departing from Lisvarrinane at 4pm. Places must be booked in advance through the Glen of Aherlow Fáilte Society.
