Ireland’s Got Mammies comedy for The Source, Thurles
Ireland’s Got Mammies
Never underestimate the power of a strong angle. Colm O’Regan might not be the most famous comedian on the circuit but he can certainly draw a crowd, thanks to the universal appeal of a show called Ireland’s Got Mammies. It is based on his cult Twitter feed, @irishmammies, which tweets the shared folk wisdom of an entire generation, using the clichés and distinctive language with which every Irish family will be all-too familiar.
O’Regan gets a laugh every time he spouts a phrase that the audience recognizes from their own mammy – or might even have found themselves uttering. Obsessions with weather, the tea, cooking and how the neighbors’ children are doing are all reflected, with the comic perfectly capturing the right turns of phase he’s had a lifetime to study.
The Twitter account continues to gather followers daily, with observations such as “I’ve the electric blanket on again tonightâ€. “Magine, and it nearly Mayâ€. “Global warming my eyeâ€; “Could I have ten euros of credit for 0 8 7 please and I wonder would you mind putting it on the phone for me like a good ladâ€; and the priceless “What do you mean ‘out’? Out where?â€
Colm has brought the world of the Irish Mammy to life in a unique and dotey way, and now he’s made a complete SHOW of Mammy.
