Councillor Louise Morgan Walsh, who sits on the board of management of Nenagh College, claimed that it was the only school in the area without a safe crossing.

“SOME CHILD is going to get killed” outside a Nenagh secondary school if a pedestrian crossing is not installed nearby, according to Councillor Louise Morgan Walsh

At the October meeting of Nenagh Municipal District, Councillor Morgan Walsh raised the issue, saying that the local community had “growing frustrations” about safety outside Nenagh College.

The Labour Party councillor, who sits on the board of management of Nenagh College, claimed that it was the only school in the area without a safe crossing.

She said that almost 350 students attend the school, and the council “can’t leave it the way it is.”

Barry Murphy, Senior Executive Engineer of Nenagh Municipal District, explained that the works would require an extensive amount of planning, and would likely involve the loss of parking spaces outside the school. However, an assessment will be carried out.

“Any works would be both complex and expensive due to the existing road layout, volumes of traffic and pedestrian usage at school access times.”

However, he proposed that the installation of the crossing could be funded under the Safe Routes to School Scheme.

“There’s no straightforward answer,” Mr. Murphy added, “When we have a design, we will have an inkling of the costs.”
