District Cathaoirleach Cllr Mary Hanna Hourigan performed the official opening of a new social housing estate in Tipperary Town on Saturday, June 25.

Aherlow Meadows, which is located at Knockanrawley, consists of 28 new houses built on a site that was originally intended to be a 22 house estate consisting of self builds.

Tipperary County Council signed the contract with Townmore for the €5.7 million development in early 2020 and despite Covid restrictions the houses were ready for occupation in 2021.

The estate consists of 2 x four-bedroom houses, 10 x three-bedroom houses, 10 x two-bedroom houses (all two-storey) and 6 x two-bedroom single-storey houses.

The estate was designed by council architect Liam Ryan. Cllr Mary Hanna Hourigan said that she was honoured and privileged to open the estate.

“This is a magnificent development in a beautiful location looking out on the Galtees. Every person is entitled to have a house and when we see the critical situation of homelessness in the country we realise how important this development is. It’s a quality estate and I want to commend the architect Liam Ryan on the wonderful houses and on the design and layout. I also want to thank Marian Clarke who was living here as a sole resident for a long period of time and for her support and cooperation, which was immense,” said Cllr Hanna Hourigan.

Director of Services, Sinead Carr, also welcomed the development and echoed the sentiments expressed by the Cathaoirleach.

“There is a high level of satisfaction in seeing this project realised and I want to wish the residents happiness and longevity in their new homes in Aherlow Meadows,” said Ms Carr.

Marian Clarke replied to the words of thanks expressed to her and said that she had great neighbours and that there was great community spirit in the estate.

Because of weather conditions the barbeque scheduled for the day had to be postponed but Marian kindly invited all assembled to her home for refreshments.
