Link to Charles Bianconi is celebrated with a Transport Through The Ages theme
Transport Through the Ages was the theme of the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Clonmel, with the special link with Charles Bianconi celebrated.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Bianconi, participating groups were asked to embrace a Transport Through the Ages theme.
Over 1,500 people took part in the lively and colourful parade as it made its way through the town from the West Gate down to the reviewing platform outside the Town Hall and opposite the building where Bianconi established his transport headquarters.
The parade was guided through the town by Banna Chluain Meala, fresh from their incredible success at the International Band Championships, where they were named as Overall Parade Winners, and Grand Marshal Mary Prenderville.
The theme of the parade had been marked by primary schools in the town in the build-up to the parade, with a 12-year-old pupil in the Presentation primary school and a 9-year-old pupil at the CBS St Mary's primary school winning bicycles in the Bianconi colouring competition organised by Clonmel Borough District.
The winning participating groups were presented with Love Tipperray Cards . Kool School won the best entry , Rocking Paddy came second and the Filipino community and Sonic Gymnastics Club came third.
