Allegedly violent passenger caused garda car to crash — claim heard in Kildare court

UPDATE

Gardaí claim that a man who arrested and was placed inside a garda car was so disruptive that he caused a vehicle collision.

Last month, Naas District Court was told that Ivan Matuashvili, with an address given as the Citywest Hotel in Citywest, County Dublin, but who is currently remanded in custody, was denied entry into a centre for asylum seekers.

This allegedly prompted the 39-year-old to drive into two security people.

Gardaí added that he was later found drinking in a forest, but when he was brought back to a garda station, he allegedly bit a female garda in County Kildare on April 26 last.

On the latest court date (Thursday, May 18) gardaí added that after he was placed in the back of a garda car, he allegedly attacked gardaí sat beside him, and this caused such a tense situation inside the car that he allegedly caused a road traffic collision.

Mr Matuashvili appeared on the date in question via video-link.

Judge Desmond Zaidan was also told by gardaí that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are not yet ready.

He adjourned the case to June 1 to allow for legal advice from the DPP.

Two medical reports are also expected to be produced on a later date.
