BREAKING: Man appears in court in connection with M7 accident that claimed teacher's life

A man has appeared at Naas District Court following the accidental death of a young teacher on the M7 last year.

Thomas Murray, 68, whose address was given as 24 Edenmore Avenue, Coolock, Dublin 5, is being prosecuted for allegedly failing to stop at the scene of an accident at Lewistown, between Newbridge and Naas, on September 24, 2022.

The accident claimed the life of 24 year old Brendan Fitzpatrick.

Detective Garda Christine Brady said the defendant remained silent when charged.

The garda also told the court there was no State objection to bail being granted.

She said that the deceased was walking on the motorway and was struck by one vehicle which remained at the scene.

She said it will be alleged that the deceased was struck by another car which left.

A third car stayed at the scene.

The court also heard that Mr Fitzpatrick was pronounced dead at around 5am

“It is a very sad case,” said Det Gda Brady.

The court was told that a family liaison officer had been appointed by the gardaí to keep the family of the deceased informed of any case developments.

Gda Brady said the family were aware of the court hearing but had decided not to attend.

The court was told that there are a large number of witnesses in the case and the book of evidence is not yet ready.

The case was adjourned on October 18.
