Kildare campaigner takes up acting role in Sightless Cinema

Coming to the Riverbank Arts Centre
Chairperson of Newbridge Disability Access Group Martin Kelly from Highfield Estate is one of the actors and has travelled to several theatres around the country with 'Sightless Cinema.
This production comes to the Riverbank Arts Centre next Friday, May 17, and will be particularly interesting for anyone with sight loss, or family members and colleagues of those who are blind or partially sighted.
The plays are entertaining for all walks of life, and have had a really positive reaction from audiences at previous presentations.
Those in attendance will be invited to wear optional blindfolds to heighten the senses.
When asked about the plays Martin said;" as a relatively new member of the Sightless Cinema Project, I enjoy meeting up with the rest of the Sight Loss group in The Rhua Red Theater every Wednesday morning around 10.30am as we polish up on our latest performance, or prepare for our next show.
“Sightless Cinema is a complete change of direction for me as I’ve been involved in Vision Ireland Sports all my life and moving from the running track to the stage is proving a very worthwhile transition. Naturally, given the constraints around dealing with Sight Loss, we are a very close knit group as we rely on each other to practice our lines and work together to create complementary sound effects to keep the audience in the dark while fully tuned into our various Sightless Cinema Presentations.”
This is the first time Sightless Cinema has come to Kildare.
It presents an evening of audio plays in the dark. It’s a fun filled programme of short surround sound audio plays, where all the pictures are in your head.
Featuring a surprising and entertaining mix of high drama and low comedy, including Horse and No Jockey a madcap comic mystery on a blind weekend away at a country hotel.
The evening ends with a chance to meet some of the cast of the Sightless Cinema project, which is created by people with sight loss from three counties in collaboration with theatre director Ciarán Taylor.
Since 2015 Sightless Cinema has presented seven original programmes of surround sound plays at the Lighthouse Cinema and IMC Cinema and most recently at the Hugh lane Gallery, Dublin and on two tours of Ireland.
They have also produced online comedies The Covid Tapes and Ballymuck Exchange - a telephone comedy.
Tickets cost €10/€6 (concession). Phone box the office on 045 448327 or book Sightless Cinema at www.ticketsolve.com. Contact the Riverbank box office for access and transport information.
