Sleeps with his head beside prison toilet - solicitor

A Kildare man is having harrowing experience in prison where been detained, Naas District Court was told.

The man, from Naas, is waiting to have all of his cases heard.

Solicitor Tim Kennelly said the man is sleeping on the floor of a prison cell and he wants to have the case with as soon as possible.

“There are people getting up in the middle of the night to use the toilet. He's found the whole experience very harrowing,” added Mr Kennelly.

In a separate unrelated case earlier this year, Mr Kennelly highlighted problems caused by overcrowding in detention centres.

In that case Mr Kennelly said a man being prosecuted for alleged breach of family law legislation was sleeping with others in a prison cell and he lies with his head beside the cell toilet.

Mr Kennelly criticised the fact that the man had been detained for over two months and the case had not yet been heard.

He said the other party in the case, a woman, had indicated that she wanted the case dropped.
