LATEST: Kildare church closed due to storm damage

The Church of the Assumption and St Patrick in Rathangan is currently closed due to storm damage.

The place of worship and its car park had no public access due to health and safety concerns.

It's understood that masonry was dislodged near the church's spire and fell to the ground.

A parish spokesperson said: "The Church and Church Carpark are closed due to storm damage to the Church.

"We are concerned to keep everyone safe as debris has fallen down from Church spire."

The 10am Mass on Monday and Tuesday were closed to the public as a result.

Churchgoers were encouraged to view live streamed services rather than attend in person.

On Sunday, Storm Fergus brought Status Yellow Warnings for wind to Kildare and several other counties.

A day earlier on Saturday, Storm Elin made landfall and brought gusts of up to 100km/hr as it moved across the country.
