The Kildare school won 11 medals in total at the South Leinster Track and Field Championships in SETU Carlow

Patrician Secondary School, Newbridge made history at the South Leinster Track & Field Championships in SETU Carlow, last Thursday, amassing 11 medals in total including six Golds.

The events, began at 10:30am and there was immediate success for the Newbridge lads with Ben Crampton taking Silver and Ruaidhri Archbold claiming Bronze in the Junior Triple Jump.

Leinster Star award winner Robert Gleeson, continues to show his undoubted athletic talent by claiming three Gold medals – the Junior Long Jump with a new PB, the 800m; he was also part of the 4x100m Relay team.

That team was unique in itself as there were debuts for Neil Anyanwu and Timothy Etuh to the sport. Kyle Byrne-Ward, recovering from a muffled start call put Anyanwu in front on the changeover; and when Gleeson handed to Etuh with a comfortable lead, he blitzed his opponents on the home straight to win by 30 metres.

Patricians were to follow that up with a similar performance from their U16 4x300m team, who claimed Gold after a timed relay competition saw them win comfortably from the opposition. It was another phenomenal achievement, led out by a strong first leg from Eoghan Dempsey; who handed to Idris Flynn, another debutant, and he sent Ryan Origan out in front, before Cillian Hughes ran a classy final leg to secure the win.

There was double joy in the Archbold household, as JP added to his younger brother Ruaidhri’s earlier success, by winning the Junior Long Jump. Kyle Byrne-Ward added to his Relay Gold with a Junior 200m Silver medal, while Timothy Etuh and Alexander Guther took Bronze medals in the Junior and Minor 100m respectively. The final event of the day came at 6:30pm; proving his prowess at the All-Ireland Cross-Country was no fluke, Ronan Keaney claimed Gold in the Junior 1500m.

Next up are the Leinster Finals in the coming weeks, with hopefully the All-Ireland’s to look forward to on June Bank Holiday weekend.
