Massive flooding event to be remembered at upcoming Kildare event

76 houses were lost to the floodwaters, including the entirety of one Kildare townland
A devastating flooding event in Kildare which occurred over 80 years ago is set to be remembered at an upcoming historical talk.
Hosted by The Curragh Local History Group, and featuring historian Seamus Cullen, the event is titled 'Tales from a drowned valley: the flooding of the Blessington Lake'.
It will aim to examine the infamous flooding incident, which occurred on the morning of March 3, 1940.
As summarised by a marker commemorating the disastrous event, the sluice gate diverting the River Liffey around the Poulaphouca Dam was closed and the Poulaphouca Reservoir began to fill up with water.
As a result of this, 6,500 acres of land had been cleared to make way for the reservoir, and 76 houses were lost to the floodwaters, including the entirety of a townland known as Ballinahown.
The talk will take place inside Suncroft Community Centre on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
It will commence at 8pm.
Attendance costs €3 for members and €5 for non-members.
