Caragh Bridge will reopen to cars in two weeks, according to a local councillor.

Workmen have been carrying out specialist repairs on the protected monument since it was damaged by a tractor on August 22.

The well-known attraction was originally built over the River Liffey in 1656.

Cllr Robert Power said: "Although a date has yet to be confirmed I expect that Caragh Bridge will reopen to cars within the next two weeks.

"As part of the safety measures introduced to prevent another detrimental incident like this reoccurring, HGVs will no longer be able to use the bridge."

"I'm working with residents on the diversion route to ensure that adequate safety measures and improvement works take place on this road."

Locals say that they don't want HGVs to travel through the Thomastown area and a working group has been set up to liaise with the Council on the issue.
