Apartments planned behind former Kildare pub

A new planning application was submitted on July 15
Plans have been lodged with Kildare County Council seeking permission to amend a previously approved residential development behind the Shamrock Bar on Main Street in Castledermot, Co Kildare.
The proposed changes relate to a scheme at the rear of 17 and 18 Main Street that originally received planning permission in October 2021 for the construction of five two-bedroom apartments across two apartment blocks. The estimated value of the revised development is €857,200.
A new planning application, submitted on July 15, seeks to replace the approved apartment blocks with five two-bedroom terraced houses. The plans include three three-storey houses, each with a 9sq m second-floor terrace, and two two-storey houses. While the number of residential units would remain unchanged at five, the layout and design of the development would be significantly revised.
The proposals also include relocating the two residential blocks within the site to provide rear gardens for each house, replacing an approved 3.2-metre-high stone wall with a 1.1-metre rendered block wall and pergola, and making minor changes to the central landscaped area.
The revised plans would reduce the number of on-site parking spaces from nine to five, with all spaces equipped for electric vehicle charging. The total floor area of the development would increase by 21.8 square metres, with the three-storey block enlarged and the two-storey block slightly reduced in size.
The planning application is currently being assessed by Kildare County Council. The original permission, granted to APD Partnership in 2021, also included site access works, drainage infrastructure, landscaping and surface parking. The latest application seeks approval solely for amendments to that previously permitted scheme.
