Don't be a sitting target for Xmas burglars: Gardai give tips to help stop break-ins

Gardai have launched 'lock up and light up' campaign to help stop burglars during the Christmas and New Year period.

Rates of break-ins increase in some areas during the festive season as householders will be out socialising and expensive gifts could be left lying around the house.

The Garda's information campaign in Co Kildare is part of a nationwide initiative backed by the force's Operation Thor anti-burglary unit.

The advice from the gardai says:

• Whether you're at home or going out, remember to turn on some lights or use timer switches.
• Lock all doors and windows and use an alarm.
• Store keys away from windows and letter boxes
• Don't keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in your home.
