A former Garda from Wicklow has appeared in court in London charged with the manslaughter of a man at a hostel in London last year.

Oliver Hurley(64) has been accused of causing fatal injuries to Maolito Chando at a Salvation Army hostel in the English capital on March 24 last year when he pushed the deceased.

Mr Hurley said that he only gave the man a 'tiny push' when he was standing in the doorway of the elevator and refusing to move, while also stating that the alleged victim had called him a 'big Irish bastard', according to the Irish Daily Star.

Mr Hurley handed himself in to Greystones Garda Station last year after his image was featured on RTÉ show Crimecall in relation to the attack. He is currently defending himself in court and denies the charge of manslaughter.

The trial continues.
