A garda surveillance operation led to the discovery of cannabis in a car, Naas District Court heard.

The defendant, who was 17 at the time was one of three people in a car stopped by gardaí on March 4, 2022 following surveillance carried out at a location in woods located in Dunmurry West, Kildare town.

A male was observed approaching a site near where gardawere aware  was the location of some €1800 worth of cannabis. The man was carrying a flashlight and when gardaí later stopped a car six “deals” of cannabis worth €330 were found in the car.

Solicitor Tim Kennelly told the court that the gardaí were not saying the defendant had anything to do with the cannabis in the woods.

Referring to the defendant’s role Mr Kennelly said he was “in the shallow end.”

He added the defendant is an apprentice electrician in his third year and said a conviction would hamper his career.

Mr Kennelly said he had explained the consequences of drug use to his client.

“A lot of people do stupid things in their youth,” he said, adding that the defendant would be willing to provide a donation for charity to avoid a conviction.

Judge Desmond Zaidan remanded the defendant on continuing bail for him to donate €2,500. He adjourned the case to March 4.
