NORTH KILDARE

An 11 month custodial sentence was imposed on a man who assaulted a 'good Samaritan.'

On Thursday, May 18, Naas District Court was told that Zack Pitt, with an address listed as 86 Brayton Park in Kilcock, but who is currently serving a custodial sentence for other offences, committed the offence on April 30, 2021.

Judge Desmond Zaidan was told by gardaí that the 23-year-old had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend at Accommodation Road in Leixlip on the evening.

When another man came to her aid, Mr Pitt allegedly assaulted him.

The alleged assault caused him to suffer bleeding and bruising to his face, gardaí claimed.

A photograph of the injuries sustained by the man, which gardaí alleged was caused by Mr Pitt, was shown to Judge Zaidan.

On the latest court date (Thursday, June 15), the court was told that the injured party declined to submit a victim impact statement.

It was heard that the injured party suffered no long-lasting injuries as the result of the assault, and that Mr Pitt had three previous convictions.

Tim Kennelly, the solicitor who was defending Mr Pitt, said that his client was due for release in December of 2024.

"He felt that the individual said more than he should have on the day," he told Judge Zaidan: "But he has had a massive reformation since being in custody."

Mr Kennelly added: "He wants to turn his life around; he's gone from 0 to 100. All he wants to ask is that any custodial sentence you may impose, that it won't interfere with his current release (date)."

Judge Desmond Zaidan remarked that 'the aggravating factors outweigh the mitigating circumstances,' and imposed an 11 month custodial sentence on Mr Pitt, which started from June 15.
